Why we included this project

appleseed is a fully open source, physically-based global illumination renderer aimed at animation and VFX work. It's a path tracer with global illumination, spectral and RGB rendering, ray-traced subsurface scattering, and solid motion blur, exposed through C++ and Python APIs plus native plugins for Maya, 3ds Max, and Blender. It also ships as a portable library and standalone command-line tools, so you can drop it into an existing DCC workflow or run it headless on a render farm. The OSL shading support and OpenColorIO integration fit pipelines that already rely on those standards. For small studios and individual artists who want control over their rendering stack without license fees, it's a mature option worth testing against the commercial engines.
