Why we included this project

For anyone who writes Nix configurations or keeps NixOS machines running, this MCP server gives an AI assistant a direct line to real package and option data instead of letting it guess. It queries live NixOS packages, system options, Home Manager and nix-darwin settings, and community sources like the NixOS Wiki, nix.dev, FlakeHub, and Noogle function signatures through one unified tool. Because the answers come from current APIs, they reflect up-to-date channels and cache status, which helps when you are pinning versions or debugging a build. The server runs over stdio or HTTP and installs with uvx, Nix, or Docker, so you can connect it to Claude, Cursor, or other MCP clients without having Nix installed yourself. That makes it a solid reference layer for configuration-heavy assistants in reproducible infrastructure work.
