Why we included this project

TavernAI is a self-hosted chat frontend for people who want a more atmospheric interface for roleplay and storywriting with large language models. It works with several backends, including KoboldAI, NovelAI, OpenAI, Claude, Ollama, and local text-generation web UIs, so you can switch providers without relearning the interface. The feature set is built around interactive fiction: character creation, group chats, world info, message swiping, and direct control over generation settings. A bundled character database and configurable themes make it a reasonable starting point for hobbyists who want a ready-made chat experience. One caveat: this is the legacy v1 line, and the maintained successor lives in the TavernAI/TavernAI repository, so treat this repo as the stable, well-documented original.
