Why we included this project

Before building a new command-line tool, it is worth checking whether someone else already shipped something close. patent does that from one query: it searches package registries like crates.io, npm, and PyPI, plus GitHub and Hacker News, then ranks matches by semantic similarity to your plain-English idea rather than by keyword matches. That catches existing tools that describe themselves differently but do essentially the same job, and each result shows when the project was last updated, so an abandoned tool stands out. The terminal interface gives an overall read of the niche, marking it open, crowded, or saturated. For indie developers and small teams doing quick discovery before committing to a build, that beats hand-searching each registry individually.
