Why we included this project
Matomo is a self-hosted analytics platform, so visitor data stays on your own server instead of going to a third party. That makes it a practical choice for teams with GDPR or similar privacy obligations. You install the PHP/MySQL application, add a small JavaScript tag to your pages, and get real-time reports on visitors, referrers, goals, ecommerce, and site search, along with dashboards and scheduled email reports. Premium plugins add heatmaps, session recordings, and A/B testing, and the platform can even tell AI assistant and chatbot traffic apart from regular visitors. For developers who want a Google Analytics alternative they can extend and control, Matomo is a mature, self-contained starting point rather than a library to wire into an existing stack.
