Why we included this project

Jan is a desktop app that runs open models entirely on your own machine, with a chat interface that feels familiar if you have used ChatGPT. It includes a model manager that downloads GGUF models from Hugging Face, so a fresh install can have a working local assistant within a few clicks. The same window also works with hosted providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Groq, which is handy when you want cloud models without leaving the app. For people who care about privacy, data ownership, or just not paying per token, the offline-first design is the main draw. Developers get an OpenAI-compatible local API and MCP support, which makes it a reasonable front end for building on local inference.
