Why we included this project

yt-dlp is the downloader most people settle on when content has to come off a website, whether that means offline viewing, editing, or just keeping a copy for later. One Python command-line tool covers thousands of sites, and a single command can pull one URL, a whole playlist, or an entire channel while flags set the format, quality, subtitles, and embedded metadata. The project updates often enough to keep extraction working as platforms change their pages, and it bundles genuinely useful extras: SponsorBlock segment removal, proxy and geo-restriction workarounds, and an embeddable API for scripted use. Teams wiring up media pipelines typically use it as the download step because the interface stays stable and returns structured metadata about each video.
