Why we included this project

OpenToonz began as Toonz, the 2D animation software that Studio Ghibli customized over years of feature-film production, so its drawing, tweening, and camera tools were shaped by real studio work rather than by demo features. It now ships as an open-source desktop application, which means animators and small studios can run it freely, modify the source, and wire their own tools into the production pipeline without licensing fees. It is a full application rather than a library, so expect a real installation and a learning curve, but teams that want to own their animation toolchain can build on a codebase with genuine film pedigree.
