Why we included this project

For motion graphics artists and VFX compositors who want a serious node-based tool without paying Nuke or After Effects license fees, Natron is one of the few genuinely production-capable open-source options. Instead of a linear timeline, you build a composite by wiring operations together in a node graph, which keeps complex multi-layer work easier to reason about and reuse. The 32-bit floating-point linear pipeline, with OpenColorIO and OpenImageIO handling color and image I/O, keeps footage color-managed and high dynamic range through the whole chain, and OpenFX plugin support lets you pull in community effects beyond the hundred-plus built-in nodes. On Linux especially, Natron often behaves more predictably than running commercial tools under Wine, and the active pixls.us community keeps documentation and plugin support moving. It is a solid foundation for a compositing pipeline, though it is worth checking that the plugins your studio relies on have OpenFX builds before committing.
