Why we included this project
Compartment is a local memory store that lets Claude, Hermes, OpenClaw, and other agents carry context across sessions instead of starting from scratch every time. Everything stays on your own machine, encrypted at rest with AEAD, and the package needs no network connection, API key, or cloud account. The embedding model ships inside the install, and a full semantic search returns in about 12 ms, fast enough that retrieval feels local rather than like a hosted round-trip. A fresh setup also comes seeded with thousands of curated facts covering hardware specs, operating systems, and network ports, so a new agent already has useful grounding. If you want agents that remember decisions and preferences without sending data anywhere, this is a practical, self-contained choice.
