Why we included this project

Most coding agents assume you will babysit one task at a time. firstmate flips that: you talk to a single first mate agent, and it spins up a crew of autonomous workers, each in its own git worktree and visible in a tmux or terminal window you can watch. The first mate supervises them, escalates only real decisions, and hands back finished pull requests or standalone investigation reports. The project is an agent distro rather than an app to install: cloning the repo gives you the AGENTS.md instructions, bundled skills, and helper scripts that any supported terminal harness, from Claude Code to Codex, can follow. That makes it a practical fit for developers and small teams who want supervised, restart-proof parallelism on real work without writing their own orchestration glue.
