Why we included this project
VidGear is a thin Python layer over OpenCV and FFmpeg that saves you from wiring up video capture and encoding by hand. Its gears are ready-made classes for common pipelines, so you can pull frames from webcams, network sources, or YouTube links and feed them into OpenCV routines in a few lines. It also handles the awkward real-time details, like stable frame rates, multithreaded capture, hardware-accelerated encoding, and streaming over HLS or DASH. The stabilizer and screen capture gears are genuinely useful for surveillance, sports analysis, and live streaming where shaky or glitchy output is a problem. For teams already comfortable with OpenCV, it's a dependable layer rather than a competing framework.
