Why we included this project

This is a curated reading list for people starting or already working through a PhD, assembled by Paul Liang at CMU with help from colleagues there. The links are grouped into practical sections, so you can jump straight to statements of purpose, choosing an advisor, surviving the program, writing and reviewing papers, teaching, fellowships, or the academic job search. Much of the material comes from the machine learning and computer science community, which makes it a good fit for students in those fields, though the general advice on research habits and academic life carries over elsewhere. The main value is that someone has already done the sorting: instead of digging through scattered blogs and university pages, you get one indexed starting point put together by people who have been through the process.
