Why we included this project
Machine Translation: Foundations and Models is the open-source edition of a Chinese-language textbook by Tong Xiao and Jingbo Zhu of NiuTrans, and the whole thing lives in this repository: the LaTeX sources plus the compiled PDF. It starts with probability and n-gram language models, then moves through statistical and neural approaches, from rule-based systems to modern architectures, so it reads as a structured curriculum rather than scattered notes. Students and researchers who want to understand how translation models are actually built will find that progression useful, and having every chapter version-controlled in one place makes it easy to jump straight to a specific topic.
