Why we included this project

Medusa is for teams that want a commerce backend they can reshape rather than a fixed SaaS storefront. The platform splits into modular pieces, orders, carts, products, payments, fulfillment, and inventory, and you extend those pieces with your own TypeScript code instead of patching core logic. That lets checkout, pricing, and sales channels match business models that don't follow the standard template, such as marketplaces, distributor platforms, point-of-sale systems, or service businesses, and the same backend also powers a customizable admin dashboard and a promotion engine. The project has moved toward agents, exposing agent skills, an MCP server, and automation hooks so coding agents and operational agents can build features, handle store tasks, and pull documentation directly, which matters if you want store operations driven programmatically rather than only through a UI. Anyone who wants full control over the commerce workflow should give it a look before defaulting to a hosted solution.
