Why we included this project

ImageJ has been a fixture of scientific imaging for years, and ImageJ2 is the rewrite that takes it beyond the flat images the original handled, into true N-dimensional data. Instead of a single-purpose computer vision library, it offers a wide range of filters, segmentation and analysis routines, and keeps the processing core separate from the interface. That means the same commands run in the familiar desktop app, headless on a server, or from Python via PyImageJ, which suits researchers and bioimage analysts who want a dependable, scriptable pipeline rather than a place to train models. The API is mature and the plugin ecosystem has decades of history, so teams building custom tools have a solid foundation to work from. For quantification and visualization on image-heavy scientific data, whether in cell biology, materials or astronomy, it is a practical workhorse.
