Why we included this project

Usage-based pricing sounds simple until you actually try to bill for it. Lago is a self-hostable metering and billing engine that ingests usage events, turns them into invoices, and collects payments through Stripe, Adyen, and other gateways, with the pricing logic exposed as data rather than hardcoded. It handles usage-based, subscription, and hybrid plans in one system, so a startup can move from flat monthly fees to fine-grained per-token or per-request metering without rebuilding its revenue stack. The analytics views surface MRR and usage trends, which helps founders and finance teams see what customers actually consume. If you run an AI service that charges per token or per call, this is a real alternative to building billing yourself or handing the whole thing to a hosted vendor.
