Why we included this project
Outlines shapes what a language model can output while it is generating, so the result is valid JSON, text that matches a regex, or output conforming to a grammar on the first try. That removes the post-processing layer many teams build to patch malformed responses, code that tends to break whenever a model or prompt changes. The same generation code runs against hosted and local backends, so moving between providers is a configuration change rather than a rewrite. If your application needs reliably shaped output for function calling, form filling, or data extraction, this is a solid base to build on.
