Why we included this project
Project NOMAD bundles offline Wikipedia, ebooks, medical references, Khan Academy courses, and downloadable maps into a single Docker-orchestrated server that runs entirely on hardware you own. After setup, no internet is needed, which makes it a solid choice for field work, disaster preparedness, remote classrooms, or any place with flaky connectivity. The built-in AI assistant works with local models through Ollama or OpenAI-compatible servers and uses a Qdrant-backed knowledge base, so you can chat with your offline documents and run semantic search without anything leaving the machine. For teams and individuals who want a turnkey offline learning and reference appliance instead of assembling Kiwix, Kolibri, and a RAG pipeline by hand, the Command Center UI and one-click app catalog are a practical shortcut. Expect to run it as a server and manage it through the browser, not treat it as a library.
