Why we included this project

Hister is the kind of tool that pays for itself the first time you remember reading something useful and have no idea where. It indexes the full text of pages you visit, via Firefox or Chrome extensions, plus local documents, so a later search finds the actual content rather than just a title and a URL. Queries handle field filters, phrases, wildcards, and result priorities, and you can point it at an embeddings endpoint if you want semantic matches by meaning rather than keywords. You can reach the index from the web UI, a terminal client, or an AI assistant through its MCP server, and multi-user support keeps each person's documents separate on a shared install. For anyone who wants to search their own material without handing it to a cloud service, this is a solid self-hosted option.
